Playing with a 3-in-1 add-on lens kit for the iPhone 6

If the best camera is the one you have on you, why not make the one on you better?

The camera on the iPhone 6 (and especially the iPhone 6 Plus) is great fun to play with. Even without any filters or special apps, it does a great job for your basic photography. Sure, die hard DSLR folks scoff, but hey, I have a DSLR … and it sits on a shelf at home.

This is not a technical review, it’s not even an in-depth review. It’s just a shot of my slipper using the new macro lens that came with my 3-in-1 lens kit for the iPhone 6. I’ll have to get more interesting than my slipper. Not to worry, I’m sure I’ll shoot loads of completely useless objects with my new toy.

I think in another life I was some molecular scientist. I just like macro lenses. I should probably get a microscope, but a portable one that I could take on walks with me. Hmm, maybe that’s not terribly practical. Maybe I just need a macro lens.

OK, got one. I’ll play with this and see if I still need a microscope. It’s not that I want to dissect caterpillars or learn about the molecular structure of ants, I just like how you can get a different perspective if you look through a different lens. We’re all seeing the same thing, or rather, the same thing is in front of all of us, but we see things differently. If you add another lens or another magnification, you see the same thing differently. It’s closer, it’s farther, it’s more colorful, sharper, more something. It’s not the same anymore. Well, it is, but it’s not.

Who knew there was such philosophy and existentialism in a $23 iPhone lens. I didn’t, but I’m going to play with it and see what happens. For now, that’s my slipper although it looks like something the mane of a horse or maybe a thatched roof. Look at the detail of that fiber in the twine. Looks like the rope from a ship.

See how much fun you can have with such a thing? I’m just getting started.

P.S. I should also write a piece called something like, “What do you buy when you are forced to buy something?” I had just returned something and had credit that, OK, fine, I didn’t have to spend, but it was going to make the return a little easier. So I ‘had’ to buy something.
