Punished severely or rewarded handsomely. Is it a risk you’re willing to take?

Punished severely or rewarded handsomely. Is it a risk you’re willing to take?

I might get fired. I might make a deal. Is the risk worth it?

Absolutely.

Ah, perspective. For someone else, the decision might be clear, “Dude, keep your day job!” But for someone else, it might be, “Hmm, it might be an interesting evening. Let’s see what happens.”

I could well get fired for a project. Probably not, but it’s possible. It’s also possible that I make a deal, start a business or join a startup. Possible.

You won’t know if you don’t try.

What's it worth? Getting fired over a sunset? Maybe it depends on who it's with. [Point Reyes National Seashore, California]

But one thing is sure: if I weren’t out possibly losing a project, I wouldn’t have the possible opportunities available to me by being out there. If I stayed at work and did my project, yes, that would make the odds better that I wouldn’t lose the project. But the odds of landing a new deal, starting something new or just plain opening my eyes to opportunity would be zero. You don’t know what might happen if you give it a chance. You know exactly what will happen if you don’t.

I’m feeling extremely risk tolerant of late. I’m up for anything. Don’t dare me to jump off a cliff (well, not to my death, but maybe something 20-feet up into a lake) because I’ll probably do it.

What factors into a decision? Especially a risky one?

  • Timing
  • Perspective
  • Attitude
  • Confidence
  • Background
  • Outlook
  • Risk
  • Chance
  • Upside
  • Downside
  • Guts
  • Fun

What factors are involved in deciding to stay home? To keep going with Same Old, Same Old? I’d venture to say that there’s not much of a decision process, it’s alms the Un-Decision, deciding not to decide.

So was the view worth the possibly lost project?

I am literally smiling as I write this. The future is bright. It’s unknown, but it’s bright.
