The War of Art: Break Through the Blocks and Win Your Inner Creative Battles
If you’re stuck and just can’t get through those blocks as a writer, this book will be a delightful read (or listen).
On the other hand, if you’re passed the blocks and creative battles, then it’s a nice confirmation that you’re on the right track.
The War of Art is a great read and Pressfield does a humorous job of dealing with the naysayer and resistance, procrastination and battling with your inner (creative) demons.
Here are a few audio clips that I saved (thanks to Audible’s new clip function):
I recently read I Can See Clearly Now by Dr. Wayne Dyer and at times during The War of Art, I thought maybe my Audible track had skipped over to Wayne Dyer as the contents were very similar. Both books go through persistence, passion and patience (not necessarily in that order) and how we can accomplish pretty much anything if we have those three. Actually, I just made up those three myself as I’ve used them before, but they’re relevant and close to what both books are saying.
I see that Pressfield has a later book, something of a follow-up book called “Do the Work” which would make sense as much of The War of Art is about actually sitting down to write. In fact, much of the book goes into naysaying and resistance. I suppose I gloss over this somewhat as I’m at 1,341 days of writing without missing a single one, so big scary fears like “sitting down to write” just don’t shake me anymore, but I can certainly remember when they did.
In fact, maybe I’m just beyond this book. It is, after all, called “Break Through the Blocks” and I’ve already done that. Then it’s “Win Your Inner Creative Battles” and I’ve done that too. In fact, why bother reading this book at all? If I’m already in the choir (as in “preaching to the choir”) or I’m already converted or graduated or indoctrinated then maybe I should read his later books.
