If you don’t celebrate change, it will dissolve into the daily drudgery of yesterday.

If you don’t celebrate change, it will dissolve into the daily drudgery of yesterday.

Celebrate, or at least recognize, transition.

But do it with a little fanfare.

I never really understood the term “closure.” But I’m learning to appreciate it more and more.

Funerals, birthday parties, weddings, big moves, they should all be celebrated. (Yes, even funerals.) It’s important for the future to be able to remember the point when it happened. Especially for the kids or younger folks.

So when a friend shared a video that Silicon Valley family announces San Francisco departure with epic music video, I knew it was important to recognize change.

I write often about change: transition, transformation, small change, big change, and especially small change leading to big change. But how does one remember when it happened? Sure, someone gets married, you have a wedding. But what about trying to put a date on the process of that change? When did the wedding come about? Truly? Was it a moment in time? Was it really the guy down on one knee and all that? Maybe. But it was probably more a series of changes leading up to the decision of the big change.

Take this Von Trapp family from Silicon Valley. From what it sounds like (I don’t know anything more about them than what my friend shared with me in the article), they wanted to create a fun farewell message to friends and family. Seems like they’re quite the musical troupe, so they did it in full theatrics.

Even the act of putting together this video is part of their transition. They’re probably not going to remember packing, moving stuff into storage, and figuring out what schools to go to. But they’re not going to forget creating this video together. This is their celebration of change, this is how they’ll remember this new phase in their lives, and how they’ll be able to transition more easily from this one to the next as this signifies the end of an era and the beginning of a new one.

So does every family need to create a Brady Bunch-style video? Well, it’d be a pretty funny collection! But we do need to acknowledge change and celebrate it. It’s important for moving on, moving up, and moving to The Netherlands.
