La Morena Totopos

La Morena Totopos

If you are a survivor of having left the western United States and are suffering from corn tortilla withdrawal, there’s a new sheriff in town.

I tend to obsess about Mexican food. Whenever I live outside of the United States (which has now been, let’s see, about 11 years), I miss Mexican food.

I know, I know. There are “Mexican” (yes, in quotes) restaurants around the world. Usually, they’re not great.

Sorry, yes, I’m a Mexican food snob. I grew up in southern California.

But after all of these years, I have learned that beggars can’t be choosers. I take what I can get.

Yesterday, I found La Morena Totopos.

Now I have never heard that word, but they are corn tortilla chips and they are authentic.

Yes, sure they have “chips” here in The Netherlands that say “tortilla” or “corn” somewhere on them, but they’re more of the manufactured variety. They’re not terrible, but they’re not great.

Enter La Morena.

La Morena has recently entered the Dutch market and they have good stuff. Refried black beans, green salsa, and now Totopos.

I put some in the oven with some refried black beans and melted (Dutch!) cheese and I didn’t even need to taste them to know they were autentico.

La Morena, I just hope you know what a service you’re providing to those of us who have left fresh corn (and flour) tortillas behind to head out onto the new horizons without the heart-melting freshness and flavors of Mexico.

Until now.
