The upside of downtime.

Jetlag. You’re up when you’re down, you’re down when you’re supposed to be up.

What to do?

What do you do?

It’s “stolen” time. It’s secret time. It’s your time.

I’m up at 3:30 AM. I don’t want to get out of bed. I don’t want to start my day. But I can’t go back to sleep.

What are my options? Limited.

I have a Kindle next to me. If I don’t have a book I’m “into,” then I need one.

I search, I scour, I find one.

If it does what it’s supposed to (which is pull me into the story), then 3:30 AM turns to 5:30 AM, I’m still awake, the sun is poking through the universe, and I maybe could get up.

Unless things are really moving along in the book.

Then maybe one more hour.

It’s a delicious, delightful, even delirious time.

It doesn’t seem to come around all that often–jetlag seems to help.

Yet this is the dream time I enjoy, I cherish, I long for in times when jetlag isn’t around.

That time when you’re alone with your thoughts, time doesn’t seem to be a factor, and the world is your oyster.

What do you do?

I read.

Maybe that’s why I like being a writer.

What do you do in those moments when you have some stolen time and the world is how you’d like it to be?

Keep writing. Keep creating.
