Farewell, Chizumulu. You were warm, sweet, and in the past.
It’s the end of an era.
Finally.
There’s pretty much only one person on the planet who even has a shred of an inkling what a momentous event this is.
But for the others, it’s really not a big deal.
It’s about change and transition. Moving on and moving up. Knowing when to say when and stopping before you know it’s too late.
It was almost too late.
Then I was saved.
I still go back to November 1, 2012 when John Muldoon challenged me to start writing again.
A transition I was on a path towards since, well, since Chizumulu.
Chizumulu is an island in Lake Malawi which separates the countries of Malawi and Mozambique. We only spent two weeks on Likoma (and never even set foot on Chizumulu), but they were life-altering times if there were ever such a thing.
When I started my design agency in the early
When I needed domains for servers to host my growing client base, I went first to my memory and then the map of the surrounding regions. I’ve had 4 or 5 servers over the past several years with exotic names only Malawians might recognize.
- Chiweta
- Chinyanya
- Chipyela
- Chizumulu
Chizumulu was the first server and now the last. At one point, I had more than 200 websites hosted with the DNS information: ns1.chizumulu.com and ns2.chizumulu.com. I quietly laughed when I thought of system admins trying to figure out if there were spelling mistakes or, who knows, maybe they even looked it up and wondered why in the world a server was named after an island in Lake Malawi where even Google Maps shows nothing but a beige form.
Ooh, update! I see
I have finally the last of the hosting clients onto greener pastures and chizumulu.com is expiring in a few days and I’ll wave it a fond farewell as it probably takes a rickety fishing boat over to nearby Likoma Island for a beer and a sunset.
