Sounds of Silence
When your 8-year old holds your hand and says nothing, can you hear a tree fall in the forest?
8-year olds don’t appreciate many things that someone, ahem, quite a bit older might, but once in a while, your frequencies melt into one and you hear the beauty of the silence.
On a lake in a raft, stop paddling and don’t say anything. See if you can hear the lapping of the tiny waves tapping the bottom.
Cycling on asphalt in the empty mountains. Only the rubber on the road. Maybe a chain churning and breath in and out.
Crickets when the sun is down, the children are asleep, the tea is warm, and the lights are out.
That palm tree a block away that somehow is magnified and comes right into your ear as if you’re next to it.
What do you hear when there is nothing to hear?
