Where there’s a way there’s a will.

Where there’s a way there’s a will.

Motivation comes from doing.

It’s also not going to come to those who … are waiting around for it.

If you sit on the couch, are you going to get motivated for a run? No. What’s your motivation anyway? Why are you running? You can’t even think that far, you’re just dreading the run. You’re going to hem and haw and debate and reason and logic your way out of it.

Whereas all you need to do is put on the shoes.

You get out there and on the road and power through the pain and get to what you were seeking in the first place: motivation. Except now the motivation is bigger–in fact, it’s bigger than you. You’re powering through towards motivation. You don’t actually have it yet. What you have first is just plain and ugly brute force and determination.

Wait, I thought it was, “Where there’s a will there’s a way?”

Now that you’re out there, your motivation is growing. It’s growing because you’re doing it. You’re running (or writing or creating or eating). Now is when your motivation is growing–it’s feeding on itself. But it recreates and grows the more you use it–the more you’re doing what you wanted to be motivated for.

Motivation grows from doing. Motivation is created from creating. Motivation doesn’t come from nothing, it doesn’t drop out of the sky. You have to build it, to create it–to generate it from nothing.

Motivation isn’t available on this side of the mountain. First, it’s uphill. Motivation is what you get (in a Dixie cup) at the top of the mountain. Motivation is not Step One. Motivation needs to be earned.

How much motivation do you have before you begin?

Today is day 1,319 of writing Every Single Day in a row. Would you like to guess how much motivation I had before I started? Let me give you a hint: it’a s really small number. In fact, it might be a negative number.

People ask me how I’m so motivated but now my answer is easy (if not even snarky … I return their question with another question, “How are you not motivated?”). But the real question, the hard question, the question you don’t really want to know the answer to is, “How were you motivated on Day Zero?”

That’s the real question. Because that’s where it starts. That’s where it’s the hardest. That’s where it begins. It begins with a single step. But the power builds, the avalanche grows, the energy self-enhances by doing it Every Single Day.

Don’t wait for motivation. Go out and get it.

  • Possible: wait
  • Impossible: receive
  • Repossible: put on the shoes
