I don’t know if I’ve ever had a serious bio. Is it time?
I think I had a serious bio when I worked at the naming company years back. Maybe because that’s the last serious job I had. Was that serious? Isn’t my job serious now? Who deems it serious? Not me.
So in publishing our book yesterday, I had to set up a few things here and there at Amazon. It was fun and it was the kind of thing where you could spend 10 minutes, 10 hours, 10 weeks or 10 years doing it all. Bio, profile, photo, links, accounts, Twitter handles, other books, etc. Whew. Then there’s more marketing of the book itself: more descriptions, titles, taglines, etc. Is all of that important. Absolutely. But I spent 10 minutes doing it and I’ll hopefully also spend 10 hours (total), but it shouldn’t drag on for 10 years.
Doesn’t everyone already know me?
Isn’t it hard to follow your own advice? It’s so easy to tell writer clients of mine, “You do have fans. No, really, you do. At least your immediate family. So write your bio and your profile and your marketing collateral as if you’re speaking to your most loving fans.” It’s true, you should do that. You do have fans. So I need to write a bio.
Does it need to be serious? No. Well, maybe if you’re writing about a serious topic. But I don’t, at least not that I know of. I’ll stick with whimsical for now. We’ll see how that goes. B is for Bio. Whew, that’s already serious enough for me just thinking about this stuff.
Congrats on your book. I took a look on Amazon. I know you and your kiddos had fun writing it.
Thanks, Jess. The even better part is that now that it’s done, they’re both writing their own books! We’ll see how long that lasts … but they’re having a ball. Thanks for stopping by.
Haha! I’ve read only a couple of your posts, so far. And already I think it might be difficult for you to be serious. :/ Good post–it made me smile. Thank you 🙂
Oh good, at least I’m still on track and in character!
Hi! I’m still trying to catch up with A to Z, and your blog title caught my eye, followed by this post–because I really need to work on my bio! And now I find that you’re another who can’t be serious. . .I might have to follow you!

I suggest (1) writing you bio then (2) writing a non-serious bio and (3) writing a serious bio. See what works, what doesn’t. Maybe you end up with #4 that’s your best one.
